T-Rex Café | Downtown Disney, Disney World

T-Rex Café is a prehistoric-themed restaurant with animatronic dinosaurs.  It’s similar to its sister restaurant, Rainforest Café.  With imitation lightening and thunder occurring throughout the meal and animatronics “reacting” in response to the changing weather, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart, i.e. our daughter.  She’s not fond of the dim lighting and thunderous noises.  But when it came to her food, I’d say she was very impressed.  We were on the Disney’s meal plan so her entrée, drink and dessert were included. Kay had the Mini Mes-O-Bones from the Kids’ Entrée, which is St. Louis style pork ribs. It’s served with a side of green beans. Kay loves her meat, especially ribs, so that was a no-brainer. t-rex02 One thing I like about Disney restaurants is that most of them try to accommodate people with allergies and/or intolerances.  So for her dessert, it was custom version of their Sorbet Sampler: 2 huge scoops of raspberry sorbet. Her eyes grew large when her dessert arrived. Ours did too.  We’ve included her hand in the image for reference. t-rex01happy-tummy-ometer : 5 out of 5 “So yummy mommy! It’s a party in my tummy!!!”

The Original Turducken

Turducken | one happy tummy

We wanted to try something different for Easter one year and was always curious about Turduckens, a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey.  So when Costco offered The Original Turducken, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to try it.  A quick email to Echelon Foods/The Original Turducken Inc. for their ingredients list resulted in a same-day reply.  Thanks Mike! They are dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free and nut-free.  We chose the Turducken with Italian sausage (pork) stuffing, which really kicked the taste up a notch.  I would say it’s a definite must-try for turkey lovers.

Wowbutter

Wowbutter | one happy tummy

We love pb&j!  And with a peanut-allergic child, we needed to find a suitable replacement pronto!  Believe all you hear about Wowbutter, the peanut butter replacement.  It REALLY does taste the same!!!!

So even though she refuses to try it, at least we can enjoy it in front of her.  And so continues our pb&j love-fest.

Jasmine Lounge, Fairmont Southampton | Bermuda

We vacationed in Bermuda and wanted to try the Jasmine Lounge at the Fairmont Southampton.  Our experience?  Well, let’s just say we went back twice more!

For our first time, Kay had the chicken fingers.  The waiter verified it with the kitchen before we ordered it since chicken fingers tend to have dairy in them.  The side was fries and a tiny ketchup bottle. The verdict?  No-go for the chicken fingers, unfortunately.  They were too peppery for her.  But the fries and tiny bottle of ketchup were a huge hit!

At our second visit the chef came over to speak with us, which was a nice touch!  We settled on whole-wheat penne with tomato sauce and meatballs.  For the drink, she had a virgin strawberry daiquiri.  She ate the penne but preferred the virgin daiquiri.  For dessert, she had a dairy-free, sugarless banana ice cream with mixed fruit (think frozen mashed banana).  Her eyes lit up when it arrived since this was one of the few times she can enjoy dessert at a restaurant.  Usually I had to bring a small treat for her if we wanted dessert too.

For the third visit, we had the pleasure of talking with the chef again.  We mentioned her disinterest in previous meals so he offered to make her something she would enjoy.  Did he say dairy-free pizza?   This personal pizza had gluten-free dough (which is also dairy and egg-free), tomato sauce, chicken, bacon and basil.  She polished off most of it in addition to her fries.  And for both her drink and dessert, she had the virgin strawberry banana daiquiri – less sweet than the other drink.   Like they always say, third time’s a charm!
